Vaccine and medical goods will be delivered through drones in Telangana

Through ‘Medicines from the Sky’, Telangana has become the first state to deliver vaccines and essentials through drone flights. Last month, the Telangana government was given a conditional exemption to conduct experimental delivery of COVID-19 vaccines using drones.

Telangana government has started ‘Medicines from the Sky’ project. He has started this project in collaboration with World Economic Forum, NITI Aayog and Healthnet Global. This project has just been started on experimental basis. The vaccine will be delivered to the people through BVLOS drone flights. For this the identified airspace of Vikarabad district will be used.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have given a conditional exemption to the Telangana government for operating experimental BVLOS drone flights for the delivery of vaccines. The exemption has been provided under the New Aircraft System (UAS) Rules, 2021. Through this, the government is making arrangements to provide medical help till the last door.

Last month, the Telangana government was given a conditional exemption to conduct experimental delivery of COVID-19 vaccines within visual line of sight (VLOS) range using drones. To accelerate the drone deployment process for application-based model generation, the grant has been extended beyond the line of sight (BVLOS). According to the information, trials can start by the end of May 2021.

Permission between sunrise and sunset Earlier, conditional exemption was given to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) to conduct a feasibility study of Covid-19 vaccine delivery using drones in collaboration with IIT Kanpur. The purpose of these permissions is to achieve the twin objectives of rapid vaccine delivery. Through this, there are efforts to make healthcare delivery at the doorstep of citizens.

One of the prerequisites for operation of experimental BVLOS drone flights for delivery of vaccines by the Telangana government is that the maximum permitted height for drone operation is 400 feet above ground level (AGL). Another condition states that the Telangana government will appoint a Single Point Coordinator (SPC) at Shamshabad ATC for the entire duration of the test flights to ensure smooth coordination with ATC.
