Star Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain has made a place in the semi-finals by performing brilliantly. With this, Lovlina has ensured India’s second medal in the Tokyo Olympics. He defeated Nien Chin Chen of Chinese Taipei 4-1 in the quarterfinals of the 69kg welterweight category on Friday. In the semi-finals, Lovlina will face defending world champion Busenaz Surmenelli of Turkey on Wednesday.
In the first round, Lovlina overshadowed the boxer of Chinese Taipei. The Indian boxer hit some great right and left hooks. On the other hand, Nien Chen also tried to attack, but could not find a break in Lovlina’s defense. In the first round, three judges considered Lovlina and two judges considered the opposition boxer better.
In the second round, the Indian boxer completely dominated his opposition player. The five judges rated Lovlina’s performance as the best. After taking the lead in two rounds, Lovlina thought it appropriate to play defensively. Nien Chin Chen tried to hit some punches, but Lovlina defended these efforts beautifully. In the third round, four judges ruled in favor of Lovlina.
This is the first victory of 23-year-old boxer Lovlina Borgohon from Assam against Nien Chin Chen. Earlier, Lovlina had faced Nien on three occasions, in which she had to face defeat.
Lovlina was given 30 marks by the first judge, 29 by the second, 28 by the third, 30 by the fourth and 30 by the fifth judge. At the same time, Nien Chin was given 27 by the first judge, 28 by the second, 29 by the third, 27 by the fourth and 27 by the last judge.
Lovlina Borgohain is the third Indian boxer to win a medal in an Olympic boxing event. Earlier Vijender Singh and MCC Mary Kom have achieved this feat. Vijender Singh first won the bronze medal in the middleweight category of the Beijing Olympics (2008). In the 2012 London Olympics, MCC Mary Kom won the bronze medal in the flyweight category.
Lovlina qualified for Tokyo by reaching the semi-finals of the Asia/Oceania Olympic Qualifiers held in March 2020. Lovlina achieved this feat by defeating Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva 5-0 in the quarterfinals. However, in the semi-finals of this tournament, Lovlina lost to Chinese boxer Hong Gu, due to which she had to be content with the bronze medal.
These two boxers are also close to winning medals
Among Indian boxers, Pooja Rani and Satish Kumar have also reached the quarter-finals. As soon as they win their next match, the medal of both of them will also be confirmed. Pooja Rani defeated Algeria’s Ichrak Chaibe 5-0 in the 75kg middleweight category on Wednesday to make it to the last eight.
At the same time, Satish Kumar secured his place in the quarter-finals by winning the 91 kg heavyweight category. In the round-16 match played on Thursday, Satish defeated Jamaican boxer Ricardo Brown 4-1.
