Dilemma or bet? Why is BJP fueling speculation on CM face in UP?

The confusion in the BJP about the Chief Minister’s face in the next year’s 2022 elections in Uttar Pradesh is not taking its name to end. On one hand, some BJP leaders are trying to enter the election battle under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, while some party leaders are putting this decision on the central leadership. Does the BJP want to maintain the dilemma on the face of the CM or is there any political stake hidden behind it.

BJP, who returned to power in the politics of Uttar Pradesh, after ending 15 years of political exile four and a half years ago, now wants to keep its feet firmly established here like Gujarat. However, in the elections to be held in 2022 next year, the confusion in the BJP about the Chief Minister’s face is not taking its name. On one hand, some BJP leaders are trying to enter the election battle under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath, while some leaders of the party are also increasing the confusion between the workers and the public by talking about leaving this decision to the central leadership. Is this BJP’s dilemma on CM’s face or is it a political bet?

In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP did not put forward any face for the chief minister’s post. Even though BJP had handed over the command of the party in the hands of Keshav Prasad Maurya in the state, but the entire election was fought in the name of PM Modi. BJP got a tremendous advantage in the elections and in the history of UP, the party won the maximum number of 311 seats. Later, the Chief Minister was crowned by Yogi Adityanath, while Keshav Prasad Maurya and Dinesh Sharma were made Deputy CMs.

BJP is seen divided into two factions on CM face
Now that the political board is being laid for the next year’s assembly elections. The round of meetings is going on in BJP from Delhi to Lucknow. Although the party has not yet publicly announced whether Yogi Adityanath will be the face of CM in the 2022 elections or whether the party will enter the electoral fray without a face like in 2017. BJP is seen divided into two factions regarding CM face. One faction is announcing to contest the election by forwarding Yogi, then the other group is creating political suspense by saying that the central leadership will decide after the elections.

Rajnath-Swatantradev openly stand in support of Yogi
BJP State President Swatantra Dev Singh and Union Defense Minister Rajnath are openly praising the work of CM Yogi. Swatantra Dev Singh had recently said that elections in Uttar Pradesh will be held under the leadership of CM Yogi Adityanath. Who is more hardworking and honest Chief Minister in UP than Yogi Adityanath?

Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh also said in the program of Aaj Tak that CM Yogi Adityanath has done a wonderful job in Uttar Pradesh. He was active even after being infected with Kovid. He continued to work even during his stay in isolation. In the next election, on the CM face, Rajnath had said that if the CM is Yogi, then who will be the other. His hard work and intentions cannot be questioned.

Keshav-Swamy put the second ball in the court of the central leadership
And from Keshav Prasad Maurya to Swami Prasad Maurya and recently became State Vice President Arvind Sharma believe that in 2022 the CM face will decide the central leadership. Government’s Labor Minister Swami Prasad Maurya, who came to the BJP office on Sunday to attend the organization’s meeting, praised Yogi but also said that after winning the 2022 elections, the party’s central leadership will decide the chief minister’s face in UP. He said that even in 2017 BJP had not declared the face of CM and Yogi was made CM after the election results. The same will happen in 2022.

Before this statement of Swami Prasad, Deputy CM Keshav Maurya has also said that it has been the tradition of BJP that the central leadership decides the Chief Minister’s face. We are first focusing only on winning the elections and the decision of CM face will be decided by the central leadership. At the same time, Arvind Sharma, who is considered close to PM Modi, talked about contesting the upcoming elections under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, but told PM Modi enough to win the UP elections.

Arvind Sharma is praising PM Modi
Arvind Sharma said that I am of the opinion that the people of UP still want PM Modi as much as they wanted in 2013-14. PM Modi’s name alone is enough to win the election. Their protection is enough. However, with this, he said that I am sure that under the leadership of your (Swatantra Dev) and CM Yogi Adityanath, BJP will get more seats than the last election. This statement of AK Sharma has come at a time when questions are being raised in many sections regarding Yogi. Apart from this, different statements of leaders regarding CM face in BJP are creating confusion.

SP National President and former CM Akhilesh Yadav said that in the UP assembly elections, the public has decided to oust the BJP from power. In such a situation, it does not matter on whose face she is contesting. CM Yogi has not yet fulfilled any promise. In such a situation, BJP should make anyone the CM face, but now she is not going to win the election.

Political advantage of BJP in dilemma
At the same time, political expert Kashi Prasad Yadav believes that BJP wants to maintain a similar dilemma on the CM face in UP, in which it has its own political advantage. All the BJP leaders try unitedly by entering the election without putting forward any face, because BJP is not the SP and BSP party of the state. BJP and Congress are such parties, where any leader of the party can get a chance to become the Chief Minister. That is why BJP wants to maintain such a dilemma regarding the post of CM in UP so that all the party leaders and their workers unite and play a role in making the party win.

Mr. Prakash Singh, Professor, Department of Political Science, University of Delhi says that keeping many options open is always good for a political party. This allows the leadership to perform the necessary multiplications to perform electoral arithmetic. All they have to do is ensure that the different factions don’t work against each other.

BJP suffered with CM face
In fact, since 2014, the states where BJP has entered the electoral fray by making the current Chief Minister as its face, it has not got any significant political advantage. Not only this, in the elections in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan, the BJP had come out with the CM face, but in all the states it had to face defeat. However, in Madhya Pradesh, the Congress has been successful in forming the government after the revolt of the MLAs. Apart from this, BJP’s seats in Gujarat, Haryana and Maharashtra had decreased. In Maharashtra, BJP was out of power and in Haryana the government was formed with the support of JJP.

At the same time, in Assam, BJP had entered the electoral fray without a chief minister face and has been successful in retaining its power. However, after returning to power, BJP handed over the chief minister’s chair to Hemant Sarma in place of Sarbananda Sonewal. In Uttarakhand, BJP has made Tirath Singh Rawat as CM instead of Trivendra Singh Rawat, but the party has decided that in the 2022 elections, it will go on the Assam model i.e. without a CM face. Similarly, no decision has been taken regarding UP yet, but the way there is confusion. In such a situation, the top leadership of BJP is completely silent and it is seeing its political advantage in this confusion.
